Alpha-pinene is an aroma chemical that is found in almost every aromatic plant and fruit. It is present in very large quantities in some botanicals and in trace amounts in others. We consume this material in our daily lives as it is present in our environment and in so many botanicals that grow naturally. It is used either knowingly or unknowingly in many commercial goods products as an ingredient within an ingredient. Any beverage with a flavor probably has some alpha-pinene in it. Chewing gum, confections, beer, wine, most fruits and vegetables all contain alpha-pinene. It can and has been isolated from many sources; however, much of the alpha-pinene available from the market is isolated and purified through vacuum distillation from a variety of essential oils including orange, lemons, eucalyptus, rosemary and camphor oils. Alpha-pinene can and will smell slightly different based on the source from which it is derived and purified but almost always has a pine like aroma.
Traditional use of certain essential oils rich in alpha-pinene (as well as other natural aroma chemicals) are used in a variety of approved OTC medicines, natural “safe” household cleaners, FDA flavorings and a variety of perfumes, cosmetics, and many more existing applications. Beyond that, alpha-pinene has many medicinal benefits for humans, including being a bronchodilator, pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antioxidant, anti-proliferative, and is said to aid in memory retention.
Extract Consultant’s first offered individual isolated terpenes to the market for both educational and creativity purposes, as people want to replace the entourage effect that is lost through the extraction process.
