This is rolling series in which we will periodically present to you many bits of awesome and useful knowledge on all things terpene.
Terpenes are amazing. So amazing in fact that they are deeply rooted in human history and it can be argued that they helped play a role in advancing and even shaping modern society.
First and foremost, terpenes are the oldest molecules synthesized by plants, and are more likely than not the most widespread group of natural chemicals. We notice them in plants first by the smell. When you smell fresh lilacs in the springtime, you’re actually taking a big whiff of terpenes.
Because of the wide variety of plants that terpenes are found in (essentially all of them), it is only fitting that they would have a wide variety of uses, and humans have discovered many of them, as well as utilized terpenes in many aspects of life, which makes the name essential oil (a moniker for terpenes) a very fitting name.
Many ancient cultures, including the Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese and Romans, began using crude processes and devices to extract terpenes from plants in order to utilize them for everything from cosmetics to religious purposes and medicine. Some of the greatest and most treasured pieces of history are directly correlated with terpenes, and terpenes helped move society forward. Terpenes are so amazing that it’s no wonder they are still widely used and coveted today.
